There are 4 main language learning skills; Reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Although, the first 3 are crucial for being able to speak fluently in a language. Reading teaches you how sentences are formed and provides insight into word contexts. Listening teaches how these sentences and words sound. And lastly, writing allows you to practice forming sentences and conjugating words. And all together, those 3 skills help transform you into a better speaker. While there is more to each skill than what has been listed above, the general idea is that they all play an important roll in language learning.

The 4 Core Language Learning Skills

Reading: Practice is the key principle for improving your reading skills. The more you read the better you get. From reading social media posts and blogs, to news articles and short stories, the resources available for reading are endless. Listening: Developing strong listening skills is essential for language learning success. Utilizing various forms of media, such as podcasts, audiobooks, songs, and even social media platforms like TikTok, allow for better listening comprehension. Through active listening, not only do you further improve your understanding of intonation, pronunciation and even vocabulary, you will also be able to understand cultural aspects, like how slang is used. Writing: Through active recall, writing helps reinforce understanding of vocabulary, grammar rules, and sentence structures. Even if your language learning goals does not prioritize proficient writing, it is still a valuable skill that everyone needs to hone. Speaking: Speaking plays a pivotal role in your language learning journey. This skill forces you to actively engage in the grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, etc. you have previously learned.
